When Should You Convert PDF to Markdown?
PDF is strong for fixed layout, printing, and page-based review. Markdown is strong for plain-text editing, version control, and publishing across tools. Conversion is useful when you need to re-edit existing text, migrate a simple document, or bring content into a Git workflow.
Good conversion candidates
- PDFs with selectable text and a simple reading order
- Reports or instructions built mostly from paragraphs, headings, and lists
- Documents you own or have permission to process
Poor candidates for direct conversion
- Scans or image-only pages
- Multi-column magazines, complex tables, forms, and charts
- Files whose exact pagination, fonts, or visual design must be retained
- Material you do not have the right to process
What to do after conversion
Keep the source PDF, compare it paragraph by paragraph, rebuild headings and links, inspect tables and reading order, and validate the result in your target Markdown renderer. Markdown dialects differ, so task lists, tables, and other extensions may not behave consistently across tools.
